Together with Torquay and Brixham, Paignton forms the English Riviera. Although the region is far from St. Tropez, this is a charming place, especially if you enjoy amusement arcades and old fashioned fish and chips. The most popular city of the three is Torquay, where Victorian villas and expensive hotels are stacked up high. Paignton is a traditional seaside resort, complete with a seafront promenade, colorful beach huts and a faded 19th century pier. Regular boat trips sail along the coastline from all three towns, and you can contact Torbay Belle Cruises or Western Lady Cruises for more information. The area has many nice beaches, the best of which is the family friendly Babbacombe, about 2 miles north of the center of town, which still has a working funicular that connects the beach to the cliff top.
