Darlington is best known these days for its retail opportunities, but its main claim to fame came in 1825 when it served as the arrival point for the world’s first passenger train. This event is the subject of the city’s top attraction, the recently reopened Head of Steam, also known as the Darlington Railway Museum. Railway buffs will enjoy a close up look at locomotives and other engines. The original displays are accompanied by excellent audiovisuals that tell the story of the railway and its impact on Darlington. The town has a few nice restaurants, the best of which is Oven, a classy French spot that has been voted the best Sunday brunch in the northeast.
