Deeside is a beautiful area that gradually gives way to the rugged Highlands around Braemar and Glenshee. There is fantastic walking in this area, as well as the Queen’s Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle. Balmoral was originally built for Queen Victoria in 1855 as a private residence, and it sits in a beautiful position at the entrance to Dee. Walking through the gardens on a nice day is a delight, especially when the flowers bloom in August. Braemar, surrounded by mountains, is a great launching pad for walking or skiing at nearby Glenshee.
