National Coal Mining Museum
The National Coal Mining Museum for England is an opportunity for an amazing day out for the whole family, providing both an educational view of an industry once integral to life in England but which has now all but disappeared and exciting adventure travelling 140m below ground through the inky depths of the disused mine shafts and tunnels.
Visitors get a truly personal education on the life of actual miners with the sites 'Meet a Miner' tour lead by a genuine ex miner. Get whisked through the ages of mining, from the sometimes shocking working conditions of the Victorian times, through to the introduction and use of pit ponies and all the way into the modern ages where the trappings of the past were replaced with more efficient modern machinery.
Fitting with the museums theme of recreating the full experience of life in a working mine, visitors are treated with being able to see and interact with actual former working pit ponies!
As a site of exceptional natural beauty, there is also a wonderful nature trail as a great way for the family to enjoy the fresh air and countryside. The varied trail includes a picnic area, valley and stream so there is always something to do or somewhere to go and enjoy. This is all surrounded by beautiful birch, oak and ash woodland and all the wonderful wildlife that make their home there.
