Portree is the capital of Skye and has two focuses: its harbor and the market square. The picturesque harbor is the ideal spot for a stroll or a cruise, while the square has facilities like banks and pubs and restaurants. There is some debate about where the town’s name comes from, with many believing it is derived from the Gaelic Port Righ (King’s Harbor), while others believe it comes from Port Ruighe, meaning port of slopes, based on its hilly locale. There are many tour operators based in Portree, and you can check out Stardust located at the pier, which takes tours to Raasay, Rona, and Holm Island. There are a number of accommodation options available, such as Braeside B&B, Grenitote B&B, and Bosville Hotel. All of these hotels serve up good pub food, so you can’t go wrong no matter where you stay.
