Despite stunning views across the Mawddach Estuary and a Blue Flag beach, the seaside resort of Barmouth is rather quiet. One highlight is the narrow gauge Fairbourne and Barmouth Steam Railway which goes 2 miles along the seafront to Fairbourne. Also in the area is the steam-driven Talyllun Railway, famous for inspiring the children’s story Thomas the Tank Engine. It goes 7 miles up the Fathew Valley to Abergynolwyn. More information about Barmouth can be obtained from the town’s tourist office located inside the train station.
