You know you are in Orkney when the accents of the locals become slightly more musical, and they have in fact been compared to Welsh. Local people here have a Viking heritage which you can see set in stone throughout the island. Lying only a few miles off the mainland, the Orkneys consist of 70 islands, of which only 16 are inhabited. These fertile green lands form a sort of oasis. The climate is surprisingly moderate, and April and May are the driest months. Orkney Ferries operates interisland ferries throughout the islands. You may be able to get good deals if you are going to stop off at three or more islands in one day.
