Henley is set on the banks of the Thames River and studded with elegant town houses, a few Tudor relics, and affluent residents. It is a usually quiet place except for when it hosts its world famous regatta and festival each year. Life in Henley has always focused on the river, and the impressive River and Rowing Museum takes a look at the town’s relationship with the Thames, the history of rowing, and the wildlife and commerce that the river helps to support. There are hands on activities and interactive displays to keep kids entertained as well. The 5-day Henley Royal Regatta is a major fixture in the town, and is a massive corporate entertainment event. It is held in the first week of July and has been an annual event since 1839. In the week following the regatta the town continues to celebrate with the Henley Festival, a black tie affair that features big name international stars. The main events take place on a floating stage on the Thames.
