Hawes is right in the heart of Wensleydale and probably the best base for exploring the northern Yorkshire Dales. The main street and the narrow lanes off it are lined with everything you need, from shops to ATMs. The tourist office shares the Old Station building with the Dales Countryside Museum, a beautiful presentation of the history of the area. About a mile north of town is Hardraw Force, the highest above ground waterfall in the country. For most of the year it’s just a little trickle on the rocks but walking up to it is still recommended if only for the views. There is a famous little inn called Green Dragon Inn which offers terrific meals and comfortable rooms. Another option for the more stylish set is Cocketts, set in a handsome 17th century town house with rooms featuring four poster beds.
