Alnwick is an elegant maze of narrow cobbled streets spread out beneath the watchful gaze of a colossal medieval castle. Not only will you find England’s most perfect bookshop here, but also the most visited attraction in the northeast – Alnwick Garden. The Alnwick Castle is on the northern side of town and overlooks the River Aln. It is the ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland and a favorite setting for filmmakers (it was Hogwarts Castle for the first few Harry Potter films). The castle is set in parkland with great walking trails offering nice views of the river and the castle. Alnwick Garden is a spectacular bit of green thumb artistry, and one of the northeast’s greatest success stories. Since the project began in 2000, the 4.8-hectare walled garden has been transformed into a spectacle that easily exceeds the grandeur of the castle’s gardens. There is a huge fountain called the Grand Cascade that spurts 30,000 liters of water for everyone to marvel at and kids to splash around in. There are a half-dozen gardens that are home to some of the rarest plants in the world.
